Protecting the foundations of your smile
Gums play an essential role in the health of your mouth. They protect the bone and tissues that support the teeth, while contributing to the stability and balance of the dentition. When they become inflamed or infected, the entire oral structure can be weakened. That's why screening and treatment for gum and periodontal disease are cornerstones of general dentistry.
At Dentown Dental Center, we pay special attention to the gum health of our patients, regardless of their age.
Gum Care (periodontics)

Understanding gum disease
Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the tissues that support the teeth, namely the gums, cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. Periodontal disease often progresses slowly and painlessly and can go unnoticed for several months.
The two main stages of the disease are:
- Gingivitis: superficial inflammation caused by the accumulation of plaque and tartar. It manifests itself as red, swollen gums that bleed more easily.
- Periodontitis: a deeper infection that attacks the tissues supporting the teeth. It can lead to loose teeth, bone loss, and eventually the loss of one or more teeth if left untreated.
What are the warning signs to watch out for?
Certain symptoms should prompt you to seek immediate medical attention:
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing;
- Persistent bad breath;
- Gum recession (teeth becoming “loose”);
- Tooth mobility or a feeling that the teeth have moved;
- Black spaces/pus between the teeth and gums.
Even if you are not experiencing pain, these signs often indicate periodontal disease that requires treatment.

Treatment tailored to your condition
Periodontal treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis. During your examination, we measure the depth of the periodontal pockets (the space between the gums and the roots), assess the inflammation, and take X-rays if necessary.
Depending on the severity of the problem, several approaches are possible:
- Root planing (deep scaling): cleaning under the gums to remove all bacteria and tartar lodged in the periodontal pockets.
- Regular follow-up: to stabilize the condition and prevent progression.
- Referral to a periodontist: in more advanced cases, a specialized evaluation may be recommended, or a specific procedure may be required.
The goal is to preserve your natural teeth and slow down the deterioration of the supporting tissues of the entire dentition.
A preventive and proactive approach
As with many dental conditions, prevention is the best defense against gum disease. Good oral hygiene at home, combined with regular professional check-ups, will keep your gums healthy in the long term.
