Sometimes prevention is better than cure

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to appear, often between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people have no problems with them, it is common for these teeth to lack the space to grow properly. They may remain partially or completely impacted, causing pain or putting pressure on adjacent teeth.

At Dentown Dental Center, we pay special attention to evaluating these teeth in order to offer an approach tailored to your situation, whether it be prevention or active treatment. Whatever your age, it's never too late to get professional advice and take action in the interest of your long-term oral health.

Tooth Extractions

Pourquoi extraire les dents de sagesse ?
Une extraction peut être recommandée lorsque des problèmes se sont déjà manifesté

Why extract wisdom teeth?

Extraction may be recommended when problems have already arisen, particularly in the following cases:

  • The teeth are impacted or semi-impacted, which promotes infections, abscesses, or cyst formation.
  • They cause pain, swelling, or difficulty opening the mouth.
  • They cause overlapping of adjacent teeth, especially after orthodontic treatment;
  • They have cavities that are difficult to treat due to their position.

Extraction may also be considered as a preventive measure, especially if X-rays show problematic positioning or a future risk of complications. Surgery planned at a young age usually allows for easier recovery.

Late adolescence or early adulthood is an ideal time, as the roots of wisdom teeth are often not fully formed and the surrounding bone is more malleable. This makes extraction easier and reduces the risk of complications.

How is the extraction performed?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and in some cases, sedative medication or a referral to an oral surgeon may be suggested to maximize comfort. The dentist performs the extraction gently, often in a few steps: incision, removal of the tooth (sometimes in several pieces), cleaning of the area, and then stitches.

After the extraction, you will receive specific instructions to promote healing. These include:

  • Applying ice to reduce swelling;
  • Eating a soft, warm diet for 48 hours;
  • Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and strenuous activities;
  • Practicing good oral hygiene, while avoiding the operated area in the first few days.

Pain medication or antibiotics may be prescribed if necessary.

What if your wisdom teeth are not causing any symptoms yet?

Even if you are not experiencing any pain, a clinical evaluation accompanied by a panoramic X-ray is useful to determine whether your wisdom teeth are likely to cause problems. In many cases, preventive extraction can save you from sudden pain, infection, or long-term tooth displacement.
