Long-lasting protection for permanent molars

Prevention is at the heart of our approach to dentistry. One of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent cavities in children is to apply dental sealants to permanent molars as soon as they erupt. This quick, painless treatment requires no tooth preparation and provides a protective barrier against bacteria and food debris.

At Dentown Dental Center, we recommend this preventive treatment for children who are at increased risk of cavities, or simply to ensure long-term dental health.

Dental Sealants

Qu’est-ce qu’un scellant dentaire ?

What is a dental sealant?

A sealant is a thin layer of protective resin applied to the chewing surface of permanent molars, specifically in the natural grooves of the teeth. These grooves, which can be very narrow and deep, are difficult to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush, even with good technique.

By covering these vulnerable areas, the sealant prevents the accumulation of plaque, food debris, and bacteria that cause cavities. It acts as invisible armor for the teeth.

When should sealants be applied?

The ideal time to apply sealants is shortly after the first permanent molars erupt, usually around the age of 6 or 7. A second treatment may be considered around age 11 or 12, when the second molars come in.

We evaluate the condition of your child's teeth during regular check-ups and will recommend this treatment if the risk of decay is considered significant.

Comment se déroule l’application ?

How is it applied?

Applying a sealant is simple, quick, and completely painless:

  1. The tooth is first thoroughly cleaned;
  2. A solution is applied to make the surface slightly rough, allowing the sealant to adhere securely;
  3. The liquid sealant is placed in the grooves of the tooth;
  4. A special light is used to harden it and make it stick in a few seconds.

Once in place, the sealant is virtually invisible and does not change the feeling in the mouth.

How long does a sealant last?

A sealant can protect a tooth for several years, often until adolescence. However, it can wear out or partially come off over time. During dental exams, we check their integrity and make touch-ups or replacements as needed.

Un complément aux bonnes habitudes

A complement to good habits

It is important to understand that sealants are not a substitute for brushing, flossing, or a balanced diet. They are part of an overall prevention plan, complementing daily oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist.

Parents play a key role in encouraging these good practices and adopting a positive attitude toward dental care.

A simple treatment that makes a big difference

Applying dental sealants is a simple, inexpensive, and highly effective way to prevent cavities at a critical age. It is a wise investment in your child's oral health that can save them from more complex (and costly) treatments in the future.
